Move to Australia on National Innovation Visa in 2025 (New Program)

Australia has officially launched the National Innovation Visa (NIV) 2025, an exciting new immigration pathway designed to attract the world’s most talented individuals. This visa replaces the Global Talent Visa (subclass 858), which closed last year, and offers a direct route to permanent residency for those who can contribute significantly to Australia’s economy, innovation, and research sectors.

What is the Australia National Innovation Visa?

The National Innovation Visa (subclass 858) is a permanent residency visa for highly skilled professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers, creatives, and athletes. It’s not just a visa—you need to be invited! First, you must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and wait for an official invitation from the Australian Department of Home Affairs before applying.

Who Can Apply?

Australia is looking for visionaries and trailblazers in the following fields:

  • Entrepreneurship and Investment
  • Academia and Research
  • Arts and Sports
  • Professional Excellence

Benefits of the National Innovation Visa (NIV) 2025

If you secure the NIV (subclass 858), here’s what’s in store for you:

  • Permanent Residency: Live, work, and study in Australia without restrictions.
  • Pathway to Citizenship: Become eligible for Australian citizenship after fulfilling residency requirements.
  • Full Work and Study Rights: No sector restrictions—you can work anywhere in Australia!
  • Family Sponsorship: You can bring your loved ones along.
  • Access to Medicare: Enjoy Australia’s top-notch public healthcare system.
  • Unlimited Travel: Move in and out of Australia freely for five years.

Heads up! Some government benefits may have a waiting period for new arrivals.

Eligibility Criteria for the NIV 2025

To qualify, you must have an internationally recognized record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in one of the following fields:

  • Academia and research
  • A profession
  • The arts
  • Sports

You must also be nominated by an individual or organization with a national reputation in your field. Your nominator can be:

  • An Australian permanent resident
  • An Australian citizen
  • An Australian organization
  • An eligible New Zealand citizen

Age & Language Requirements

  • No age limit, but if you’re under 18 or over 55, you need to prove that your skills provide an exceptional benefit to Australia.
  • If you’re 18 or older, you must show functional English proficiency—or pay a second installment fee if you don’t meet the requirement.

How to Apply for the National Innovation Visa?

To apply for the NIV 2025, you first need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through ImmiAccount. Your EOI should showcase your achievements, awards, and recognitions. If your profile stands out, you will receive an official invitation from the Australian Department of Home Affairs. Once invited, you must submit a full application for the NIV (subclass 858) via ImmiAccount, along with all necessary documents, including proof of achievements and nomination. Additionally, you will need to complete health and character checks, including a medical examination and police clearance certificates. If your application is approved, you will be granted permanent residency in Australia.

Visa Fees and Processing Time

The application fee for the National Innovation Visa starts from AUD 4,840 for the primary applicant. If you are over 18 and do not meet the English language requirement, you may have to pay a second installment fee. Additional charges apply for including family members in your application. Processing times vary depending on individual circumstances, and applicants can check the Visa Processing Time Guide Tool for an estimate.

Can You Bring Your Family on the NIV?

Yes, the National Innovation Visa allows applicants to include their family members in their application. This includes a spouse or de facto partner, dependent children under 18, and, in some cases, parents (if the primary applicant is under 18). All family members must meet Australia’s health and character requirements before they can be included in the visa.

Important Dates and Deadlines

The Global Talent Visa (subclass 858) officially closed on December 6, 2024, making way for the launch of the National Innovation Visa 2025, which is now open for applications. Once invited, applicants must submit their visa application within 60 days to remain eligible.
