Australia Student Applications Require Confirmation of Enrolment in 2025
Major changes are now in effect for international students applying for an Australian student visa from outside the country!
As of January 1, 2025, all new offshore applicants for the Subclass 500 Student Visa must provide a Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) at the time of application. This policy, implemented under Ministerial Direction 111, ensures that only students with a secured place at an Australian educational institution can apply for a visa.
🔍 What Has Changed?
Previously, students applying for an Australian student visa from overseas had some flexibility regarding when to submit their COE. Now, all offshore applicants must provide proof of enrolment upfront to submit a valid visa application.
📌 Key Updates for Offshore Student Visa Applicants (Effective March 1, 2025):
✔️ COE is now mandatory for all new applications submitted from outside Australia.
✔️ Visa validity remains up to 5 years, depending on course duration.
✔️ Work restrictions remain at 48 hours per fortnight while studying.
✔️ Visa application fee starts from AUD 1,600, unless exempt.
✔️ Pacific Island and Timor-Leste citizens will benefit from a lower visa fee starting March 22, 2025.
✔️ Partial refunds available for eligible Pacific Island and Timor-Leste citizens who applied between July 1, 2024 – March 21, 2025 (refund applications must be submitted by June 22, 2025).
💥 Why Has This Change Been Implemented?
The Australian government is tightening student visa regulations to prevent misuse and ensure that only genuine students enter the country. The new policy closes loopholes that previously allowed applicants to lodge visa requests without securing admission into a course.
⏳ What Should Students Do Now?
🔹 Before applying for a student visa, obtain a COE from your institution.
🔹 Make sure your course is registered with CRICOS.
🔹 Check your eligibility and ensure all required documents are prepared in advance.
🔹 Pacific Island and Timor-Leste students should review their eligibility for fee reductions and refunds.
🔹 Apply early! Visa processing times vary under Ministerial Direction No. 111.
⚠️ Failure to provide a COE at the time of application will result in automatic rejection.
