New Zealand 2nd AEWV Work Visa Policy Revision Announced for 2025

For many foreign workers currently enjoying life and career opportunities in New Zealand, the question of extending their stay is paramount. The New Zealand government has addressed this with the announcement of the second Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), effective March 10, 2025. This renewal pathway is specifically designed for those already working in New Zealand under the initial AEWV and looking to continue their journey.

Navigating the Second AEWV: Key Changes and Requirements

The second AEWV provides a crucial opportunity for those whose initial visas are nearing expiry. However, it’s essential to understand the nuances of the new system to ensure a smooth transition.

Who is Eligible?

  • Current AEWV Holders: This visa is exclusively for individuals already working in New Zealand under the first AEWV.
  • Duration Matters: Eligibility is contingent on the length of your current AEWV and whether you’ve reached your maximum permitted stay.
  • Maximum Stay Limits: Remember, the maximum continuous stay varies from three to five years, depending on your ANZSCO skill level and the issue date of your first AEWV. If you’ve reached this limit, a 12-month break outside New Zealand is required before reapplying.
  • New Entrants: If you’re new to New Zealand and don’t currently hold an AEWV, you must apply for the initial AEWV before becoming eligible for future renewals.

The Job Token: Your Key to Renewal

A critical aspect of the application process revolves around the job token, a unique link provided by your employer.

  • Reusing Job Tokens (For Pre-March 10, 2025 AEWVs): If your initial AEWV was granted on or before March 9, 2025, you might be able to reuse your existing job token, provided you remain in the same role, with the same employer, at the same location, and maintain at least the same salary.
  • New Job Tokens Required (For Post-March 10, 2025 AEWVs): Any AEWV applied for on or after March 10, 2025, necessitates a new job check and a new job token.
  • Exceptions: Reusing job tokens is not permitted for those who were paid below NZD $29.66 per hour in certain low-wage occupations at the time of their first AEWV.

Application Timing and Essential Documents

  • Early Application: It’s highly recommended to apply for the new AEWV well before your current one expires.
  • Valid Documents: Ensure your medical and police certificates are valid at the time of application.
  • Employer Readiness: Confirm your employer has a valid job token ready for your application.

Bringing Family Members

  • Partner and Children: Your partner and dependent children can apply for visas aligned with the duration of your new AEWV, provided they meet all visa requirements and pay the necessary fees.
  • First-Time Applications: If this is the first time you’re supporting their visa applications, you must meet specific pay and skill requirements.
