European Visitors Must Apply for ETA to Visit UK Starting April 2025 Onwards

The UK government has announced a major change to its border security system, requiring European visitors to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before traveling to the UK. Starting April 2, 2025, all eligible European travelers must have an approved ETA before entry, marking a significant shift in the UK’s travel requirements.

What Does This Mean for European Travelers?

This move follows the UK’s successful rollout of ETAs for visitors from the USA, Canada, and Australia last year. Over 1.1 million travelers have already obtained an ETA, benefiting from a smoother entry process into the UK. The Home Office emphasized that this new system aims to enhance border security while still allowing quick, convenient travel.

Minister for Migration and Citizenship, Seema Malhotra, highlighted the government’s commitment to a fully digital, contactless UK border, stating:

“Securing our borders is a foundation of the UK government’s Plan for Change. By digitizing the immigration system, we are paving the way for a seamless travel experience in the future.”

How to Apply for an ETA?

Applying for an ETA is fast and simple:
Application Methods: Via the UK ETA app or GOV.UK
Processing Time: Instant approval for most applicants; some cases may take up to 3 working days
Cost: £10 for multiple visits over two years (or until passport expiry)
Validity: Allows stays up to 6 months per visit

Travelers must provide biographic and biometric details and answer security-related questions before approval. Once granted, the ETA is digitally linked to the traveler’s passport—eliminating the need for paper documents.

Not a Visa – But Mandatory for Entry

The ETA is not a visa, but a digital permission to travel. It applies to all visa-exempt nationalities and is designed to screen travelers before arrival, reducing the risk of border delays.

The UK government is collaborating with airlines, ferry operators, and rail carriers to ensure a smooth transition for all European travelers.

What Should European Travelers Do Now?

🔹 Apply early to avoid last-minute issues
🔹 Check passport validity to ensure ETA remains valid
🔹 Plan ahead as ETAs will be mandatory from April 2, 2025

The last major step in the UK’s border digitization strategy, this policy will impact millions of European visitors annually. With swift approvals and digital processing, the UK government aims to make travel easier while reinforcing security at its borders.
