Obtain ETA to Travel to UK from March 2025 Onwards – New Update

The UK government has announced a significant change to its immigration system with the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), set to be a mandatory requirement for visa-exempt travelers from April 2, 2025. The new digital travel permission aims to streamline border security while allowing visitors to apply and receive authorization quickly and efficiently.

Who Needs an ETA?

From April 2, 2025, the ETA requirement will apply to European travelers who currently do not require a visa for short stays. Eligible non-European visitors already need an ETA to travel to the UK.

The ETA is not a visa but serves as a digital permission to travel. It does not guarantee entry into the UK, as border officials will still assess travelers upon arrival.

How to Apply for an ETA?

Applying for an ETA is a straightforward and digital process. Visitors can apply via:

    • The UK ETA app (available on Google Play and Apple App Store)
    • The GOV.UK website (for those without access to a smartphone)

Most applicants receive an automatic decision within minutes when applying through the UK ETA app. However, the UK government advises visitors to allow up to three working days in case further review is required.

To apply for an ETA, travelers need to:

    • Pay a £10 application fee (expected to rise to £16 in the future)
    • Provide passport and contact details
    • Upload a valid digital photo
    • Answer a set of security and criminality questions
    • Travel using the same passport used for the ETA application.

ETA Validity and Multiple Entry

An ETA allows multiple trips to the UK over a period of two years or until the applicant’s passport expires—whichever comes first. Each stay can be up to six months at a time.

How ETAs Improve UK Border Security?

The ETA system enhances border security by gathering essential biographic, biometric, and security data before travelers arrive in the UK. This prevents individuals deemed a security risk from traveling to the country.

What Happens if an ETA Application is Refused?

  • Applicants will be informed of the reason for refusal and can reapply.
  • No appeals process is available for ETA refusals.
  • If denied an ETA, travelers must apply for a UK visa to seek entry.

ETA Requirements for Northern Ireland Travelers

  • British and Irish citizens do not need an ETA.
  • Non-Irish residents of Ireland who do not require a visa to visit the UK do not need an ETA when traveling within the Common Travel Area (CTA) but must have proof of residence.
  • However, if traveling from outside the CTA, an ETA is required before departure.

ETA for Transit Passengers

  • Passengers transiting airside (not crossing through UK border control) are temporarily exempt from ETA requirements.
  • Those passing through UK border control will still need an ETA.
  • The government will keep this exemption under review.

Impact on Travelers from March 2025

For travelers heading to the UK from March 2025 onwards, securing an ETA in advance will be essential to avoid disruptions. The move aligns the UK with countries such as the US, Canada, and Australia, which have introduced similar pre-travel authorization systems.

Travelers should check their ETA eligibility and application timelines on GOV.UK before booking flights to ensure a hassle-free journey.
