Duke University Stuart Hall Archive Project Summer Research Fellowship 2025

The John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute (FHI) at Duke University, in partnership with the Stuart Hall Archive Project (SHAP) at the University of Birmingham, UK, invites applications for the Stuart Hall Archive Project Summer Research Fellowship 2025. This unique opportunity seeks 2-3 graduate research fellows for an 8-week program to engage with the Stuart Hall Archives and explore the intellectual and political legacies of the renowned cultural theorist.


Fellowship Benefits

  • Stipend: Each fellow will receive a non-compensatory stipend of $6,666.
  • Travel and Housing: Roundtrip travel to the UK and up to 4 weeks of international student housing at Birmingham are fully covered.
  • Research Access: Full access to the Cadbury Research Library and opportunities for guided visits to related archives, such as the Institute of International Visual Arts (INIVA) and George Padmore Institute in London.
  • Presentation Support: Fellows are expected to present their findings in Fall 2025, with mentoring support for turning their research into publications, dissertation chapters, or community engagement projects.

Degree Levels

The fellowship is open to Duke PhD students in the arts, humanities, and interpretive social sciences.


Eligibility Criteria

  1. Applicants must be enrolled PhD students in relevant fields.
  2. They must have departmental approval confirming eligibility for summer funding as part of this fellowship.
  3. Individuals of any nationality are welcome to apply, with immigration and visa support provided as needed.

Key Fellowship Dates

  • Program Duration: May 19 – July 11, 2025
    • Preparatory Period: May 19 – June 1 (virtual orientation and independent preparation in Durham, USA).
    • On-Site Research: June 2 – June 27 (at the Cadbury Research Library, University of Birmingham, UK).
    • Wrap-Up Period: June 30 – July 11 (concluding in the USA with a focus on finalizing research and planning presentations).
  • Info Session: Monday, January 27, 2025, at 10 AM (virtual session).

  1. A brief project proposal (up to 2 pages) outlining the specific research focus at SHAP, including references to the archive’s holdings.
  2. Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  3. Confirmation of fellowship eligibility from the applicant’s Department’s Director of Graduate Studies (this may be submitted separately).
